Theo Parrish
Born in Washington, D.C. in 1972, Theo Parrish grew up in Chicago and moved to Detroit after studying at the Chicago Academy of the Arts and the Kansas City Art Institute. This background informs his attention to form, texture and repetition. Active since the mid-1990s, Parrish is rooted in Detroit house history while expanding it with disco, jazz, soul and looser structures; his tracks are often slow, gritty and deliberately off-kilter. After “Lake Shore Drive” in 1995 and the EP Baby Steps in 1996, he founded the Sound Signature label in 1997, which became a cornerstone of his discography. His debut album First Floor appeared in 1998, followed by releases including Parallel Dimensions (2000), Sound Sculptures Volume 1 (2007), Sketches (2010), American Intelligence (2014) and Wuddaji (2020). A DJ as well as a producer, Parrish is also involved in collective projects such as 3 Chairs—with Moodymann, Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman—as well as The Rotating Assembly and T.O.M. Project. His often-long sets, which draw on multiple traditions of Black American music, circulate through clubs, festivals and international electronic stages.
