Omar-S

Based in Detroit, producer and DJ Omar-S, born Alexander Omar Smith, has developed since the early 2000s a personal take on the city's house and techno. When he launched his label FXHE Records, Omar-S early on chose self-release and limited pressings of maxi singles, which circulated first in clubs and specialist record shops before reaching an international audience. His discography revolves around several landmark albums in his career — including Just Ask The Lonely (2005), It Can Be Done But Only I Can Do It (2011), Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself (2013), The Best (2016) and You Want (2020) — complemented by numerous 12-inch series. His work blends Detroit house, raw techno and funk- and soul-influences, featuring repetitive structures, direct basslines and a deliberately stripped-down production style. On stage Omar-S favors dancefloor-oriented sets, often long and improvised, which he presents at clubs and electronic music festivals across North America and Europe while maintaining strong ties to Detroit's local scene.
