Magic System
Formed in the late 1990s in the Anoumabo neighborhood of Abidjan, Magic System brings together A’Salfo, Manadja, Goudé and Tino around a zouglou rooted in the Ivorian scene, characterized by collective singing, everyday storytelling and rhythms designed for dancing. Magic System released Papitou in 1999 and then gained widespread attention with “1er Gaou,” a track that quickly transcended the Ivorian border to circulate across the Francophone world in the early 2000s. The quartet then pursued a trajectory between Ivory Coast, France and international stages, gradually broadening its repertoire toward a festive African pop—infused with afro-dance, urban music and coupé-décalé influences—while remaining connected to its original zouglou matrix. This evolution is audible on albums such as Poisson d’avril (2001), Un Gaou à Paris (2004), Touté Kalé (2011) and Africainement vôtre (2014). Over the years, Magic System has increased its appearances on major popular stages and Francophone festivals while opening their sound to other worlds through collaborations with artists like Khaled and Chawki. For Magic System, choral refrains, straightforward phrasing and a dancing pulse remain at the core of an immediately recognizable style.
