James Holden
British producer and DJ James Holden has developed, since the late 1990s, a distinctive trajectory at the intersection of electronic music and sound research. Born in Exeter in 1979 and initially noticed for maxi singles associated with trance and progressive house, he quickly moved away from those frameworks to explore freer forms combining slow techno, textured electronica and long hypnotic constructions. The launch of his label Border Community in 2003 became a central milestone in his activity, providing a platform for his own productions and for artistic direction within European experimental electronic scenes. In terms of discography, his debut album The Idiots Are Winning (2006) established a format of fragmented pieces close to minimal and abstract music, followed by The Inheritors (2013), where he injects krautrock, electronic folk and repetitive music influences. With The Animal Spirits (2017), credited to James Holden & The Animal Spirits, he adopted an acoustic-ensemble formation and amplified the improvised dimension of his music, continued on Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space of All Possibilities (2023). Alongside numerous remixes and mixes such as Balance 005 (2003) and DJ-Kicks (2010), James Holden has developed a live format that oscillates between a live band and a club set, on the border between rave culture and the legacy of experimental music.
