Insomnium
Formed in Joensuu in eastern Finland in 1997, Insomnium plays melodic death metal often at mid-tempos, drawing on Nordic melodies, doom-tinged elements and occasionally progressive structures. The band’s sound has been shaped around the compositions of Niilo Sevänen, Ville Friman and Markus Hirvonen, with a growing emphasis on melancholic atmospheres, harmonized guitars and the alternation between rhythmic heaviness and more contemplative passages. After the albums In the Halls of Awaiting (2002) and Since the Day It All Came Down (2004), Insomnium broadened its metal audience with Above the Weeping World (2006) and then Across the Dark (2009), which introduced more keyboards and clean vocals. Having joined Century Media in the early 2010s, the group continued that evolution on One for Sorrow (2011) and Shadows of the Dying Sun (2014). Markus Vanhala then became a permanent member, reinforcing the twin-guitar dynamic. Insomnium also stands out for more narrative formats, notably Winter’s Gate (2016), conceived as a single long piece, and Anno 1696 (2023), inspired by a Finnish historical setting. Between European and North American tours, Insomnium has shared bills with bands such as Katatonia, Amorphis, Dark Tranquillity and Omnium Gatherum.
