Soilwork
Formed in Helsingborg, Sweden, in the mid-1990s, Soilwork emerged from the Scandinavian melodic death metal movement while steering it toward a more modern sound. Centered on vocalist Björn “Speed” Strid, the band quickly developed a writing style combining fast, melodic guitars, vocals alternating between extreme registers and clean singing, prominent keyboards and song structures close to contemporary metal. After a raw debut, Steelbath Suicide (1998), Soilwork refined their approach on The Chainheart Machine (2000) and A Predator’s Portrait (2001), before emphasizing melody and catchy choruses on Natural Born Chaos (2002) and Figure Number Five (2003). The Stabbing the Drama (2005) and Sworn to a Great Divide (2007) era saw them consolidate a sound blending melodic death, thrash influences and rock touches, supported by steady touring in Europe, North America and Japan. With the double album The Living Infinite (2013), which further broadened the band’s palette, and later releases The Ride Majestic (2015), Verkligheten (2019) and Övergivenheten (2022), Soilwork continued to explore a balance between rhythmic aggression, worked harmonies and more atmospheric moods, confirming a distinctive position at the crossroads of Swedish melodeath, modern metal and more accessible elements without abandoning an extreme metal foundation.
