Enslaved

Formed in 1991 in Haugesund, on the west coast of Norway, Enslaved initially joined the Norwegian black metal wave before gradually pushing its boundaries. Founded by Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson, who remain in the band to this day, Enslaved early blended extreme foundations with elements of Viking metal, then opened up with a style marked by progressive metal, psychedelic textures and long compositions. The first albums, Vikingligr Veldi and Frost in 1994, then Eld in 1997, establish a harsh, fast and epic style, nourished by Nordic mythology and lyrics then written in Icelandic or Old Norse. Over the years, Enslaved expanded its language with records such as Below the Lights in 2003, Isa in 2004, Ruun in 2006, Vertebrae in 2008, Axioma Ethica Odini in 2010, RIITIIR in 2012, In Times in 2015, E in 2017, Utgard in 2020 and Heimdal in 2023. The band has for a long time evolved in a format that articulates clear vocals and harsh singing, black metal riffs, progressive developments and contemplative atmospheres. Regularly on European and international metal stages, Enslaved has also crossed paths with members or close associates of bands like Emperor, Immortal, Borknagar or Audrey Horne, while maintaining a distinctive identity in the Norwegian metal landscape.
