Amorphis
Formed in Helsinki in 1990, Amorphis began as a death metal band with doom-tinged elements before quickly broadening their palette toward melodic and progressive metal infused with motifs from Finnish traditions. The early albums, The Karelian Isthmus (1992) and Tales from the Thousand Lakes (1994), established this combination of heavy riffs, atmospheric keyboards and references to the Kalevala, while Elegy (1996) deepened the blend of clean singing and guttural vocals. With Tuonela (1999), Am Universum (2001) and Far from the Sun (2003), Amorphis occasionally moved away from death metal to incorporate more progressive rock, melancholic melodies and looser arrangements. The arrival of singer Tomi Joutsen in 2005 opened a new phase, initiated by Eclipse (2006) and continued on Silent Waters (2007), Skyforger (2009), The Beginning of Times (2011), Circle (2013), Under the Red Cloud (2015), Queen of Time (2018) and Halo (2022). Over the decades, Amorphis has maintained an identity based on the alternation between power, sombre lyricism and Finnish imagery, both in the studio and on European and international metal stages.
