Dark Tranquillity

Founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1989 under the name Septic Broiler, Dark Tranquillity became an early part of the Gothenburg melodic death metal scene, developing a sound where harmonized guitars, extreme vocals and dark atmospheres coexist. The early albums Skydancer (1993) and The Gallery (1995) established the band among those who shaped this emerging movement, while The Mind’s I (1997) refined its contours. With Projector (1999), Haven (2000) and Damage Done (2002), the band took a more introspective turn, incorporating more keyboards, contrasts between melody and aggression and, at times, clean vocals. Character (2005) and Fiction (2007) reinforced this tension between fast rhythms, precise melodic work and electronic textures, continued by We Are the Void (2010) and Construct (2013). Atoma (2016) and Moment (2020) extended the evolution toward a still-melodic but more atmospheric metal, carried by Mikael Stanne’s vocals amid a shifting line‑up. Dark Tranquillity remains associated with sustained live activity—international tours and festivals—where the band revisits a catalogue spanning more than three decades of melodic death metal.
