Girls in Hawaïi
Formed in the early 2000s in the Braine‑l’Alleud area of Belgium, Girls in Hawaïi operates within indie rock and melodic pop sung in English. The band centers on the vocals and guitars of Antoine Wielemans and Lionel Vancauwenberghe, joined by several musicians who craft a sound of bright guitars, understated keyboards and flexible rhythms, often tinged with melancholy. Girls in Hawaïi first gained attention on the Belgian independent scene with the album From Here to There (2003), then solidified their place in Francophone Europe with Plan Your Escape (2008) and numerous club and festival tours. The death of drummer Denis Wielemans in 2010 brought a pause before they returned with Everest in 2013, an album with more atmospheric moods. The band continued to explore more electronic, contemplative textures with Nocturne (2017) and Hello Strange (2018), the latter revisiting parts of their repertoire live in stripped‑down versions. The project alternates studio work and stage activity while maintaining a strong foothold in the Belgian alternative rock scene.
