Rotting Christ
Founded in 1987 in Athens by brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis, Rotting Christ emerged in the first wave of Greek black metal before developing a more melodic, ritualized form of extreme metal. Initially influenced by grind and raw black metal, the band refined a so‑called Hellenic aesthetic with Thy Mighty Contract (1993) and Non Serviam (1994): melodic guitars, often mid‑tempo pacing, and a dark yet clear atmosphere. With A Dead Poem (1997) and Sleep of the Angels (1999), they incorporated gothic elements and more accessible song structures while remaining rooted in extreme metal. Across the 2000s, from Theogonia (2007) to AEALO (2010), the group expanded into a more choral, ritual register, drawing on Byzantine references, mythology and ancient languages. The albums Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy (2013), Rituals (2016), The Heretics (2019) and Pro Xristou (2024) continue to develop liturgical atmospheres, featuring chant‑like vocals, repetitive motifs and prominent choirs. Still built around the core of Sakis and Themis Tolis, Rotting Christ tours regularly across European and international stages, presenting a black metal shaped by its Greek origins yet open to hybridization within extreme metal.
