Dark Funeral

Founded in Stockholm in 1993 by guitarists Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon, Dark Funeral belongs to the second wave of Swedish black metal, employing an approach centered on tremolo-picked riffs, very fast tempos and openly satanic imagery. After a self-titled EP released in 1994, Dark Funeral issued The Secrets of the Black Arts in 1996, followed by Vobiscum Satanas (1998), Diabolis Interium (2001), Attera Totus Sanctus (2005) and Angelus Exuro pro Eternus (2009), establishing a sound that is simultaneously abrasive, precise and strongly melodic in its guitar work. Around Lord Ahriman, who has remained the group's central figure, the lineup has often changed, particularly on vocals, with a notable period under Emperor Magus Caligula before the arrival of Heljarmadr, heard on Where Shadows Forever Reign (2016) and We Are the Apocalypse (2022). Active on international tours as well as at festivals devoted to extreme music, Dark Funeral has maintained a consistent aesthetic line—between orthodox black metal, rapid execution and a production cleaner than the genre's early standards.
