Primordial
Formed in Skerries, north of Dublin, Primordial since the late 1980s has developed a singular trajectory in Irish metal, at the crossroads of early black metal, pagan metal, folk metal and a dark heavy metal with often expansive tempos. The band first became known in the underground with the Dark Romanticism demo in 1993, before establishing its personality on Imrama in 1995 and then A Journey’s End in 1998, where extreme roots already mingle with Celtic-inspired melodies and a broader writing. Around the singer Alan Averill, aka Nemtheanga, Primordial gradually shifted its center of gravity toward a sound heavier, more narrative and less strictly black metal, noticeable on Spirit the Earth Aflame (2000), Storm Before Calm (2002), The Gathering Wilderness (2005) and To the Nameless Dead (2007). Primordial's lyrics regularly draw on Irish history, memory and culture, without reducing the band to a folkloric register. Present on European stages since the 1990s, in clubs as well as at festivals, Primordial has continued this path with Redemption at the Puritan’s Hand (2011), Where Greater Men Have Fallen (2014), Exile Amongst the Ruins (2018) and How It Ends (2023), while maintaining this alliance of massive guitars, austere melancholy and contained epic tension.
