Dimmu Borgir
Dimmu Borgir formed in 1993 in Oslo, Norway around Shagrath, Silenoz and Tjodalv, quickly forging a sound that blends black metal with ambitious orchestration. Their debut album For All Tid laid the foundations for a dark, melodic aesthetic, further developed on Stormblåst. With Enthrone Darkness Triumphant in 1997 the band took a decisive step thanks to a broader production and prominent use of keyboards, paving the way for symphonic black metal that would leave a lasting mark on the scene. They followed with Spiritual Black Dimensions and Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, two records combining virtuosity, grand arrangements and gothic atmospheres. The approach reached an almost cinematic scale with Death Cult Armageddon in 2003 and In Sorte Diaboli in 2007, a concept album with the trappings of a dark opera. Despite lineup changes, Dimmu Borgir continued their ascent with Abrahadabra in 2010, propelled by choruses and colossal orchestrations, and Eonian in 2018, a more esoteric, textural work. On stage the band amplifies this excess through spectacular staging that unites martial force, monumental keyboards and an incantatory presence.
