Chelsea Wolfe

Born in Roseville and trained between Roseville and Sacramento in Northern California, Chelsea Wolfe has, since the late 2000s, developed a songwriting voice that blends dark folk, gothic rock, doom metal, noise and experimental textures. She began circulating on independent scenes with The Grime and the Glow in 2010 and Apokalypsis in 2011, two records combining an ethereal voice, abrasive guitars and stripped-down atmospheres. With Unknown Rooms: A Collection of Acoustic Songs (2012) she tightened her approach around a more acoustic format before expanding her palette on Pain Is Beauty (2013), Abyss (2015) and Hiss Spun (2017) — albums marked by a denser, heavier sound, greater emphasis on slow rhythms, dark sonic layers and industrial tensions. Chelsea Wolfe then alternates between sparseness and intensity with Birth of Violence (2019) and She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She (2024). Alongside her solo career she collaborated with Converge on Bloodmoon: I (2021), took part in projects with Russian Circles, Deafheaven, Xiu Xiu and Myrkur, and co-wrote the music for the film X (2022) with Tyler Bates. On stage she regularly performs with a band in which Ben Chisholm plays a central role in maintaining her artistic universe.
