Anna von Hausswolff
Emerging from the independent scene in Gothenburg, Sweden, Anna von Hausswolff has, since the late 2000s, developed a body of work where dark songwriting, experimental music and organ writing converge. A singer, composer and organist, she relies on an expressive voice and long, drone-like textures to build pieces at the crossroads of atmospheric pop, slow-burning, taut rock, dark ambient and a quasi-liturgical aesthetic. Her debut album, Singing from the Grave (2010), presents an intimate folk foundation tinged with gothic hues, while Ceremony (2012) foregrounds the organ and more expansive arrangements. With The Miraculous (2015) and then Dead Magic (2018), von Hausswolff extends her compositions into longer, more repetitive forms, often aligned with currents of post-rock and heavy, slow music, and she occasionally collaborates with bands from the metal and experimental scenes. All Thoughts Fly (2020), devoted entirely to the organ, pushes this instrumental approach even further, moving between minimalism, drone and pared-back melodic motifs. Alongside her recordings, Anna von Hausswolff performs regularly, solo or with a band, in contemporary music venues as well as in churches and festivals dedicated to experimental aesthetics.
