Emma Ruth Rundle

Born in Santa Monica, California in 1983 and long linked to the Los Angeles scene before settling in Portland, Emma Ruth Rundle has since the late 2000s developed a writing that sits between dark folk, ambient, post-rock, and experimental rock. Initially active with The Nocturnes, where she blends atmospheric guitars, misty textures and introspective singing on Wellington (2008), A Year of Spring (2009) and Aokigahara (2011) releases, Emma Ruth Rundle later joined Red Sparowes and contributed to the album The Fear Is Excruciating, but Therein Lies the Answer (2010). She immediately after founded the trio Marriages, whose denser and electric aesthetics take shape on the EP Kitsune (2012) and then the album Salome (2015). In solo, Emma Ruth Rundle refines a more personal language with Electric Guitar: One (2011), Some Heavy Ocean (2014), Marked for Death (2016), On Dark Horses (2018) and Engine of Hell (2021), where spare arpeggios, saturated crescendos, and a voice both fragile and frontal coexist. Her career also includes a split with Jaye Jayle in 2017, the collaboration with Thou on May Our Chambers Be Full (2020) and then The Helm of Sorrow (2021), as well as the more improvisational and abstract EG2: Dowsing Voice (2022). Emma Ruth Rundle has also composed for cinema, notably the score for Riley Stearns' film Dual, extending a body of work that also traverses poetry and instrumental forms.
