Cannons
The Los Angeles–based trio Cannons has been crafting electronic pop since the early 2010s, with dream-pop and nu-disco inflections, driven by Michelle Joy’s gentle vocals, Ryan Clapham’s guitars, and Paul Davis’s keyboards and programming. Born from exchanging demos online, Cannons released its first EP, Up All Night, in 2014, followed by Night Drive in 2017, which established a sound blending retro synths, languid rhythms, and melancholic melodies. The band refined this aesthetic on the album Shadows (2019), where R&B influences, slow-burn funk, and cinematic atmospheres intersect. The placement of the track Fire for You in the Netflix series Never Have I Ever broadened Cannons’ audience beyond Los Angeles’s independent scene and brought increased visibility in the music press. Later signed to a major label, Cannons continued exploring a synthetic pop that is both minimalist and sensual with the albums Fever Dream (2022) and Heartbeat Highway (2023), underscoring the importance of luminous textures, rounded bass lines, and songwriting focused on intimate, nocturnal themes.
