Phantogram

Formed in Greenwich, New York State, Phantogram brings together Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter around a blend of electronic pop, indie rock, and trip-hop influences. After starting out as Charlie Everywhere in the late 2000s, the duo adopted the name Phantogram and released a handful of EPs that took them across the American indie circuit, from small venues to festivals. Their debut album, Eyelid Movies (2010), established an aesthetic built on hip-hop-derived rhythms, textured guitars, synth washes, and the contrast between Sarah Barthel’s voice and Josh Carter’s contributions. Phantogram then broadened its sonic palette with Voices (2014), where the compositions grew more expansive while remaining centered on pop forms, followed by Three (2016), marked by darker atmospheres. In parallel, Phantogram opened up to collaboration with the Big Grams project alongside Big Boi in 2015, before continuing this trajectory—between melodic electronic pop and more abrasive textures—on Ceremony, released in 2020.
