Yumi Zouma
Formed in Christchurch, New Zealand, Yumi Zouma has been crafting indie pop since the early 2010s, shaded by dream-pop and synth-pop and distinguished by gentle vocals, airy guitars, and understated electronic textures. Conceived as a remote studio project, with members based in different countries trading ideas via files, the group first made its mark with two EPs on the Cascine label, EP I (2014) and EP II (2015), which established a melodic, hushed sonic palette. The quartet - Christie Simpson, Josh Burgess, Charlie Ryder, and Olivia Campion - followed with the debut album Yoncalla (2016), then Willowbank (2017), where the writing focused more on concise song forms. In parallel, Yumi Zouma released a complete cover of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours in 2017, an exercise that highlights their taste for sophisticated, light pop. EP III arrived in 2018, before the band consolidated its approach on Truth or Consequences (2020) and Present Tense (2022), albums where electronic arrangements, 1980s pop influences, and harmonized vocals take center stage. Active on stages across North America, Europe, and Oceania, Yumi Zouma has established its path on the international indie-pop circuit while preserving an intimate aesthetic oriented toward melodic songwriting.
