Cattle Decapitation
Born in the mid-1990s in San Diego, California, Cattle Decapitation established itself on the American extreme scene by combining death metal and grindcore in an increasingly technical and structured approach. The band formed in 1996 from musicians rooted in the local punk and grind scene; the arrival of vocalist Travis Ryan would come to define the group's vocal identity, alternating deep growls, raspy screams and near-spoken passages. After starting on the independent circuit with Homovore in 2000 (Three One G), signing to Metal Blade Records ushered in a new phase with To Serve Man (2002), followed by Humanure (2004) and Karma.Bloody.Karma (2006), where the band honed a mix of fast riffs, fractured rhythms and themes focused on animal welfare, ecology and a direct critique of anthropocentrism. The Harvest Floor (2009), Monolith of Inhumanity (2012) and The Anthropocene Extinction (2015) cemented their place on international tours and extreme metal festivals, while Death Atlas (2019) and Terrasite (2023) continued a more atmospheric and conceptual direction without abandoning the deathgrind core. Stabilized around Travis Ryan and guitarist Josh Elmore, Cattle Decapitation operates as an extreme metal band with multiple composers, with each release tending toward more narrative and progressive forms.
