Benighted

Formed in Saint-Étienne in the late 1990s, French band Benighted occupies the realm of brutal death metal tinged with grindcore. Founded in 1998 around vocalist Julien Truchan, Benighted released a self-titled debut in 2000 that still leaned toward a blend of black and death metal, before clearly steering their writing toward a more frontal deathgrind from Psychose (2002) and Insane Cephalic Production (2004). Although the lineup has seen several personnel changes, it has remained built around a tight guitar–bass–drums core. The band followed with Identisick (2006) and Icon (2007), then joined the Season of Mist roster for Asylum Cave (2011), which firmly established Benighted on the European extreme scene. The albums Carnivore Sublime (2014), Necrobreed (2017) and Obscene Repressed (2020) extend this approach with a dense sound, sharply cut rhythmic arrangements and lyrics addressing mental disorders, social derailments and contemporary violence. Active on tour within specialized venues and festivals, Benighted develop an even more direct live version of their deathgrind focused on the impact of riffs and the alternation of low growls, shredded screams and spoken passages, helping to secure the band’s long-term presence on the French and international extreme metal landscape.
