The Zenith Passage

Born in Los Angeles in the early 2010s, The Zenith Passage plays technical death metal with a strong progressive bent, where rhythmic precision, dynamic shifts and dense compositional writing intersect with a dark science‑fiction aesthetic. The project coalesced around guitarist Justin McKinney and first released the EP Cosmic Dissonance in 2013, before issuing their debut album Solipsist in 2016. After several lineup changes, The Zenith Passage reemerged with a revamped roster that notably included Derek Rydquist on vocals and Brandon Giffin on bass — both veterans of The Faceless — while Chris Beattie also joined on guitar. This new phase resulted in Datalysium in 2023, a record that continues the band’s trajectory toward technical death metal featuring labyrinthine structures, progressive touches, dissonant textures and a pronounced sense of atmosphere. On stage as in the studio, The Zenith Passage aligns with the most technical wing of the American extreme metal scene, delivering a rigorous sound that never collapses into mere instrumental showmanship.
