Dying Fetus
Formed in 1991 in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Dying Fetus established itself in the American death metal scene with an approach that blended brutal death metal, technical death metal and, in its early years, elements of grindcore. The band initially coalesced around John Gallagher and Jason Netherton, released the demos Bathe in Entrails (1993) and Infatuation with Malevolence (1994), and issued its first album, Purification Through Violence, in 1996. By the late 1990s Dying Fetus had refined a style built on very dense riffs, pronounced tempo changes, fast drumming and shared guttural vocals. Killing on Adrenaline appeared in 1998, followed by the EP Grotesque Impalement in 2000 and notably Destroy the Opposition the same year, their first record for Relapse Records. After several lineup changes, including departures of musicians who went on to form Misery Index, Dying Fetus continued with Stop at Nothing in 2003 and stabilized its lineup around the trio John Gallagher, Sean Beasley and Trey Williams from the late 2000s onward. This lineup backed the albums War of Attrition (2007), Descend into Depravity (2009), Reign Supreme (2012), Wrong One to Fuck With (2017) and Make Them Beg for Death (2023), alongside an ongoing presence on metal tours and festivals in North America and Europe.
