Nile

Formed in Greenville, South Carolina, Nile has since 1993 developed a dense and fast technical death metal, driven by the guitars and Karl Sanders’s vocals, the sole founding member still present. The band has built itself around a writing approach that blends the brutality of death metal, complex structures, and a measured use of melodic colors inspired by the Near Eastern Antiquity, in a more evocative than ethnographic approach. Nile’s lyrics draw heavily on Egyptology, ancient religions, Mesopotamia and, at times, the imagery of H. P. Lovecraft, giving its discography a very clear thematic identity. After the early landmarks set by the EP Festivals of Atonement in 1995 and the album Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka in 1998, Nile followed with Black Seeds of Vengeance in 2000, In Their Darkened Shrines in 2002 and Annihilation of the Wicked in 2005, a period during which the band established itself on American and European death metal scenes. The arrival of Greek drummer George Kollias in 2004 durably stabilized Nile’s sound, which continued with Ithyphallic in 2007, Those Whom the Gods Detest in 2009, At the Gate of Sethu in 2012, What Should Not Be Unearthed in 2015, Vile Nilotic Rites in 2019 and The Underworld Awaits Us All in 2024. Despite several lineup changes, Nile remains associated with a very precise playing style, high tempos, and a dark, labyrinthine sonic staging.
