Cryptopsy
Rooted in Montreal’s extreme music scene in Quebec from the late 1980s, Cryptopsy formed around a core of musicians drawn to very fast, technical death metal, changing their name from Necrosis in the early 1990s. The band gradually established itself in brutal death metal with the albums Blasphemy Made Flesh (1994) and None So Vile (1996), where a style emerged defined by complex structures, dissonant riffs, frequent rhythmic breaks and a very upfront guttural vocal delivery. Cryptopsy then explored even more technical forms on Whisper Supremacy (1998) and And Then You’ll Beg (2000), a period marked by lineup changes and the dense drumming of Flo Mounier, before the return of vocalist Lord Worm on Once Was Not (2005). Throughout the 2000s the band experimented with more modern and metalcore-influenced elements on The Unspoken King (2008), an experiment that preceded a refocusing on tightened technical death metal with Cryptopsy (2012) and As Gomorrah Burns (2023). Mostly active as a quartet, Cryptopsy tours regularly across North America and Europe, in clubs and specialized festivals, and remains associated with an extreme aesthetic combining rhythmic virtuosity, controlled sonic violence and a taste for labyrinthine compositions.
