MARO
Born in 1994 in Lisbon, Portuguese singer and songwriter MARO has crafted a musical world at the crossroads of pop, folk, and soul, enriched by jazz influences and Lusophone music. After studying at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, MARO first gained recognition online through videos that combine original songs and re-arranged covers, often centered on voice and guitar, then gradually extended her presence to stages across Europe and the United States. In 2018, MARO released a trilogy of albums—MARO, Vol. 1; MARO, Vol. 2; and MARO, Vol. 3—that laid the groundwork for a repertoire in Portuguese and English, alternating intimate formats with more vocally driven pieces. Her work emphasizes sung harmonies, acoustic textures, and a direct melodic writing style, regularly developed in collaboration with other instrumentalists and singers. In 2022, MARO represented Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest with Saudade, saudade, selected via the Festival da Canção, further consolidating her presence on the international pop scene. In parallel, MARO pursues numerous collective projects—most notably in vocal ensembles around Jacob Collier—and continues along a path where studio recordings, filmed sessions, and tours help to disseminate songwriting rooted both in the Lusophone tradition and in a global pop aesthetic.
