Black Label Society
Founded in Los Angeles in 1998 by guitarist and singer Zakk Wylde, a former stage partner of Ozzy Osbourne, Black Label Society crafts a brand of heavy metal shaped by classic hard rock, Southern inflections, and more melodic electric ballads. Centered around Zakk Wylde—who is responsible for most of the songwriting and the band’s sonic identity—Black Label Society operates as a fluid core with rotating musicians, with bassist John DeServio appearing regularly and a lineup typically configured as a quartet. From the debut album Sonic Brew in 1999, the band established an aesthetic built on massive riffs, mid-tempo grooves, and extended solos, a template heard on records like The Blessed Hellride (2003), Mafia (2005), and Doom Crew Inc. (2021). Through extensive touring, Black Label Society has become a fixture on North American and European metal stages, frequently appearing at traveling festivals and on major package tours alongside other heavy and hard rock acts. The band’s music shifts between fast numbers, darker atmospheres, and almost acoustic passages, with a gritty yet melodic vocal delivery that bridges classic metal influences, a blues sensibility, and a more contemporary guitar tone.
