Staind
Formed in 1995 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Staind established itself over the years as an American band positioned between alternative metal, nu metal and post-grunge, driven by Aaron Lewis’s dark, melodic voice and Mike Mushok’s heavy guitar work. Initially active on the local scene, Staind self-released the album Tormented in 1996, which caught Fred Durst’s attention and led to a deal with Flip/Elektra before the release of Dysfunction in 1999. The release of Break the Cycle in 2001 marked a turning point, adopting a more melodic sound that emphasized rock ballads and introspective lyrics focused on personal failings, family tensions and addictions. Staind continued in this vein with 14 Shades of Grey (2003) and Chapter V (2005), refining a balance between heavy riffs, mid-tempos and sung choruses, while the lineup stabilized around Lewis, Mushok, bassist Johnny April and drummer Jon Wysocki, the latter later being replaced onstage by Sal Giancarelli. After the self-titled album in 2011 the band went on hiatus, with Aaron Lewis pursuing a country career and the other members exploring various projects. Staind gradually returned to live performances from the late 2010s and made their studio comeback with Confessions of the Fallen in 2023, continuing a heavy, melodic and introspective rock aesthetic.
