Pantera

In the early 1980s Pantera coalesced around brothers Darrell “Dimebag” and Vincent “Vinnie Paul” Abbott, joined by bassist Rex Brown and, after several singer changes, Phil Anselmo. The first albums—Metal Magic (1983), Projects in the Jungle (1984), I Am the Night (1985) and Power Metal (1988)—belong to a heavy metal style marked by glam, before an aesthetic shift in the early 1990s. With Cowboys from Hell (1990) Pantera established a drier, heavier sound associated with groove metal, built on highly rhythmic riffs, often mid-tempo pacing and vocals heavily laden with emotional distortion. Vulgar Display of Power (1992), Far Beyond Driven (1994), The Great Southern Trendkill (1996) and Reinventing the Steel (2000) extended this approach, mixing thrash elements, hardcore influences and touches of southern rock, with lyrics that explore internal tension, power dynamics and social observation. Pantera became a touring-focused quartet, intensely oriented toward international tours and metal festivals. Internal conflicts led to a halt in activity in 2003; the murder of Dimebag Darrell in 2004 and Vinnie Paul’s death in 2018 froze the band’s history. From 2022, however, Pantera returned to the road in a lineup centered on Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown, accompanied by Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante, to perform the repertoire built over that trajectory.
