M(h)aol

In Dublin, M(h)aol emerged in the 2010s as a post‑punk outfit marked by an explicitly feminist and queer approach, their name referencing the historical Irish figure Gráinne Mhaol. Centered on singer Róisín Nic Ghearailt and producer Jamie Hyland, M(h)aol formed as a variable‑lineup group split between Ireland and the UK, active on the independent scenes in Dublin and London and at various alternative festivals. Their sound is rooted in tense post‑punk close to noise rock, where abrasive guitars, repetitive bass lines and dry drums support an often spoken‑shouted vocal style; the forthright lyrics address gendered violence, consent, mental health and the legacy of Irish Catholic institutions. After several noted DIY singles, including “Laundries” and “Asking For It”, M(h)aol released the EP “Gender Studies” in 2021, which condenses this political, direct songwriting. The debut album “Attachment Styles”, released in 2023, extends this approach by further exploring dynamics of tension and release, between very stripped‑down tracks and denser passages, establishing M(h)aol as one of the most recognisable contemporary Irish post‑punk projects because of their activist grounding and raw aesthetic.
