Born in New York in 2005 and raised on the Lower East Side, Shane Michael Boose adopted the moniker Sombr at the time of his first recordings—a name drawn from his initials that reflects the introspective mood of his early work. An American singer, songwriter, and producer now based in Los Angeles, Sombr has been crafting a sound at the crossroads of alternative rock, indie rock, and alternative pop, citing influences that range from Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, and Phoebe Bridgers to David Bowie, Prince, and Oasis. After he began producing on his computer as a teenager and sharing tracks online, he released the 2021 single “Nothing Left to Say,” then gained traction with “Caroline” in 2022, which led in 2023 to a deal with Warner Records and the release of the EP In Another Life, co‑produced with Tony Berg. Sombr’s career reached a new level in 2024–2025 with “Back to Friends” and “Undressed,” which went viral on TikTok before entering international radio rotation, ahead of his debut album I Barely Know Her in 2025, also preceded by “We Never Dated” and “12 to 12.” Alongside his first headlining world tour, Sombr has been steadily making his mark onstage after opening for Nessa Barrett and Daniel Seavey, and has multiplied television appearances, including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, while earning nominations at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards and at the Grammy Awards for Best New Artist.
