Underoath

Formed in Ocala, Florida in 1997, Underoath emerged from the North American metalcore and post-hardcore scene rooted in the Christian rock circuit, later establishing a base in Tampa. The band is built around aggressive guitars, vocals that alternate between screams and clean singing, and significant use of keyboards, marked by notable lineup changes—most prominently the arrival of singer Spencer Chamberlain in the early 2000s alongside drummer/vocalist Aaron Gillespie. The early albums Act of Depression (1999) and Cries of the Past (2000) remain grounded in metalcore with melodic death metal influences, while The Changing of Times (2002) and They’re Only Chasing Safety (2004) opened Underoath toward more melodic post-hardcore and screamo. With Define the Great Line (2006) and Lost in the Sound of Separation (2008), the band emphasized more complex structures and a more atmospheric tone, before entering a hiatus after Ø (Disambiguation) in 2010 that culminated in an official split in 2013. Underoath’s reformation in 2015 led to a redefinition of their sound, incorporating more alternative rock and electronic elements on Erase Me (2018) and Voyeurist (2022), while remaining connected to metal circles and international festivals.
