Taking Back Sunday

Formed in 1999 in Amityville on Long Island, New York, Taking Back Sunday first emerged within the American emo and post‑hardcore scene of the early 2000s. Their sound blends punk tension, melodic choruses and distinctive vocal interplay. After several lineup changes in their early years, they drew attention with Tell All Your Friends (2002) and broadened their palette on Where You Want to Be (2004) and Louder Now (2006), where the songwriting became more direct and rock‑oriented while retaining the emotional intensity of their earlier material. The band’s history is also marked by notable departures and returns, notably John Nolan and Shaun Cooper, who left to form Straylight Run before rejoining Taking Back Sunday in 2010. Centered on Adam Lazzara, John Nolan and Shaun Cooper, the current core continues an aesthetic between emo‑pop, pop‑punk and alternative rock—characterized by taut guitars, overlapping vocal dynamics and a taste for structures that are both abrasive and accessible. The discography also includes New Again (2009), Taking Back Sunday (2011), Happiness Is (2014), Tidal Wave (2016) and 152 (2023), which demonstrates broader songwriting without abandoning the band’s identity.
