Ondara

Arriving in Minneapolis in the early 2010s after growing up in Nairobi, J.S. Ondara has followed a distinctive path combining migration, self‑taught learning and a passion for American folk. He has focused on songwriting built around voice and acoustic guitar, with narrative lyrics that address exile, identity and the tensions of the American dream, in an aesthetic that sits between folk, Americana and soft rock. Discovered on Minneapolis’s local scene through intimate shows, he recorded his debut album Tales of America in 2019 for Verve Forecast — an essentially acoustic record that earned him a 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album. During the lockdown period Ondara released Folk N’ Roll Vol. 1: Tales of Isolation (2020), a more direct project where folk is shaded by rock and rougher songwriting. With Spanish Villager No. 3 (2022), he structured the songs around a fictional alter ego and broadened his sonic palette with full‑band arrangements, incorporating indie rock and soul influences while keeping the voice central. Between studio recordings and North American tours, Ondara continues a trajectory where personal narratives intersect with the conventions of contemporary folk.
