Frazey Ford
Born in Whitehorse, Yukon, and later active in Vancouver, Frazey Ford first came to prominence around the turn of the 2000s as a co‑founder of the folk trio The Be Good Tanyas, a group associated with an acoustic revival blending folk, alternative country, old‑time and americana. With that band, Ford developed songwriting rooted in North American traditions before steering her solo career toward a more soulful and introspective sound. Her debut album, Obadiah, was released in 2010 and established a framework where folk guitars, slow tempos and an approach close to Southern soul coexist with singer‑songwriter material. Ford continued in that direction with Indian Ocean in 2014, recorded in Memphis with members of the Hi Rhythm Section, which accentuated the presence of rhythm and blues, muted grooves and a supple vocal often slightly behind the beat. In 2020, U kin B the Sun extended that trajectory with broader production, still positioned between folk, soul and R&B. Frazey Ford thus operates at the crossroads of contemporary roots and soul scenes, in a register where vocal texture and the precision of phrasing occupy a central place.
