Great Lake Swimmers

Helmed by singer-songwriter Tony Dekker, Great Lake Swimmers emerged in the early 2000s in Ontario, Canada, built around a Toronto-based core of musicians and a revolving lineup that notably includes multi-instrumentalist Erik Arnesen. The group works in an indie folk and folk-rock vein, favoring intimate songwriting, understated acoustic arrangements, and a pronounced focus on sonic space, with several recordings made in unconventional locations—such as churches and abandoned buildings—to harness their natural reverberation. Great Lake Swimmers released a self-titled debut in 2003, followed by Bodies and Minds (2005) and Ongiara (2007), which further established the project on Canada’s independent folk scene. Lost Channels (2009) and New Wild Everywhere (2012) continued along this path with a more prominent role for the full band, while A Forest of Arms (2015) and The Waves, The Wake (2018) broadened the palette toward more orchestrated textures. With Uncertain Country (2023), Great Lake Swimmers carry on with songwriting shaped by landscapes, memory, and movement, borne by a gentle voice and measured tempos, and continue to alternate tours across North America and Europe between club stages and festivals devoted to folk and independent music.
