John Smith

Born in England, linked to Essex in several biographical sources and listed as originating from Devon on his site, John Smith has since the mid-2000s developed an acoustic folk repertoire marked by indie folk, the singer-songwriter craft and a highly crafted guitar playing. His music rests on stripped-down compositions, sober melodies and a particular attention to rhythm, with a guitar approach that blends fingerpicking, open chords and a percussive pulsation without ever leaving a readable song format. John Smith released The Fox and the Monk in 2006, followed by Live at the Roundhouse in 2007, Map or Direction in 2009 and Eavesdropping in 2011, before continuing with Great Lakes in 2013, Headlong in 2017, Hummingbird in 2018, Live in Chester in 2020, The Fray in 2021, The Fray: Variations in 2022 and The Living Kind in 2024. Over the course of his trajectory, John Smith has toured extensively in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States, both solo and alongside artists such as Iron and Wine, David Gray, Lisa Hannigan or James Yorkston, and he has also contributed to Lisa Hannigan’s recordings. His career, initially built largely outside the traditional label circuits, sits in a contemporary British folk scene where the intimacy of interpretation matters as much as instrumental precision.
