Dominique Fils-Aimé
Carried by a soulful voice with a velvety timbre, Dominique Fils-Aimé has, from her base in Montreal, developed a personal approach to vocal jazz, nourished by her Haitian roots and the legacy of African American music. Coming to prominence in the mid-2010s, notably among Quebec audiences, she has gradually made her mark on jazz and soul stages across Canada, then in Europe and throughout North America, performing in a small ensemble or in more orchestrated settings depending on the project. Her debut album, Nameless (2018), opened a trilogy that examines the history and memory of African diasporic communities, continued with Stay Tuned! (2019) and then Three Little Words (2021), where minimal soul, contemporary jazz, R&B influences, and echoes of spirituals intertwine. With Our Roots Run Deep (2023), Fils-Aimé expands this work by more introspectively exploring notions of lineage and rootedness. Her songwriting emphasizes vocal rhythm, choral textures, and silence as much as harmony, giving her recordings a stripped-down aesthetic that carries over to the stage, from intimate formats to specialized festivals, within the catalog of the Montreal label Ensoul Records.
