Melody Gardot
Between vocal jazz, blues and Brazilian influences, Melody Gardot has been shaping since the mid-2000s a body of work centered on the voice, slow ballads and a marked sense of intimate storytelling. Born in New Jersey in 1985 and associated with the Philadelphia scene, Gardot turned to composing after a serious accident in 2003 and began performing in small clubs, where a repertoire blending reworked standards and original songs emerged. An independently circulated early EP preceded the 2006 album Worrisome Heart, reissued in 2008, which established Gardot in a register of contemporary jazz tinged with folk. With My One and Only Thrill (2009) and The Absence (2012) the singer deepened orchestral arrangements and opened her music further to Latin rhythms, bossa nova and Mediterranean colors. Currency of Man (2015) foregrounded a more soulful, urban side, while the live release Live in Europe (2018) documents Gardot’s stage work, increasingly geared toward large venues and international festivals. Sunset in the Blue (2020) returns to a crooner-like jazz aesthetic with expansive orchestration, and the duo record Entre eux deux with pianist Philippe Powell (2022) explores a more pared-down formula focused on voice–piano interaction and intimate songwriting.
