Yu Su

Born in Kaifeng in Henan province and based in Vancouver since 2013, Yu Su has, since the mid-2010s, developed work that straddles composition, production, DJing and sound art. Her music blends ambient, experimental electronics, oblique house, downtempo and dub inflections, with fluid textures, flexible rhythms and harmonies that sometimes reveal jazz-tinged colors. She began producing in 2014 and quickly released on several independent labels, with releases on People's Potential Unlimited and Wichelroede in 2017, then RVNG Intl. and Arcane in 2018, followed by Second Circle and Music From Memory in 2019. After a mainland China tour that same year, Yu Su launched the label bié to distribute music by artists she met there. Alongside her productions, Yu Su continues to DJ across the Vancouver scene, international circuits and on radio—notably NTS—where her selections extend her musical approach, between ambient, discreet groove and exchanges among Asian, North American and European scenes.
