Sybil
Born in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1963, Sybil — real name Sybil Ilona Lynch — emerged in the late 1980s in a style that blends R&B, soul, pop and dance, with incursions into new jack swing and house. She made her recording debut in 1986 with the single “Falling in Love” and released the album Let Yourself Go in 1987 on Next Plateau. Sybil broadened her audience with Sybil in 1989, issued in the United Kingdom as Walk On By; her takes on Dionne Warwick classics such as “Don’t Make Me Over” and “Walk On By” were set against production that straddled modern soul and club pop. Her career continued with Sybilization in 1990, followed by two distinct albums in 1993: Doin’ It Now! for North America and Good ’N’ Ready for Europe, the latter underlining her connection to the contemporary British dance-pop aesthetic. Over the years Sybil collaborated with West End on “The Love I Lost” and with Salt-N-Pepa, while maintaining a steady presence on dance and club stages. After Still a Thrill in 1997 she became less prominent in the mainstream circuit but continued to record and periodically release house- and dance-oriented tracks throughout the 2000s and 2010s.
