The Hives
The Hives are a Swedish band formed in Fagersta in the mid-1990s around Pelle Almqvist, Nicholaus Arson, Vigilante Carlstroem and Dr. Matt Destruction, later joined by Chris Dangerous and quickly by bassist The Johan and Only. From the start they established themselves as pillars of the 2000s garage rock revival through a strict visual identity, a keen sense of stage gimmickry and a direct songwriting style. Their international trajectory accelerated with Veni Vidi Vicious (2000), propelled by «Hate to Say I Told You So», which became an alternative rock classic. Tyrannosaurus Hives (2004) and The Black and White Album (2007) followed, confirming their taste for immediate hooks, controlled energy and a black-and-white aesthetic that became their signature. After a quieter period they returned in 2012 with the self-produced Lex Hives, and in 2023 released The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons — a nod to the mysterious fictional songwriter at the heart of their mythology since the beginning. Still regarded as one of the most incisive bands of their generation, The Hives continue to pursue an ultra-effective vision of rock shaped by more than twenty-five years of career.
