SebastiAn

Active on the Parisian label Ed Banger since the mid-2000s, SebastiAn established himself as a central producer and composer of the electro wave that followed the first French touch. Born in 1981 in Boulogne-Billancourt, he drew attention with a series of maxi singles for Ed Banger, including “Smoking Kills” (2005) and “Ross Ross Ross” (2006), which mix abrasive house, saturated electro and hip-hop–influenced constructions. His tracks rely on sample chopping, rhythmic ruptures and heavy compression, giving his sound a dense, percussive quality suited both to clubs and to a more direct, frontal listening experience. In 2011 SebastiAn released the album Total, which condenses this aesthetic while opening onto more pop-oriented songwriting; he returned in 2019 with Thirst, notable for a more prominent use of voice and guest collaborations. Alongside his solo discography, SebastiAn works as a producer for other artists, notably Charlotte Gainsbourg, Frank Ocean and Kavinsky, which has broadened his range to song formats, R&B and film scoring while retaining the electronic tension and taste for contrasts that characterize his work.
