Poppy
Under the moniker Poppy, American singer and songwriter Moriah Rose Pereira—born in Boston, via Nashville, and now based in Los Angeles—has built a world at the intersection of internet culture, experimental pop, and metal. First active on YouTube in the mid‑2010s as That Poppy, she paired offbeat videos with early, candy‑coated electropop tracks, then released the EP “Bubblebath” in 2016 and the album “Poppy.Computer” in 2017, both marked by J‑pop and synth‑pop influences. With “Am I a Girl?” in 2018, Poppy began introducing more abrasive textures and heavy guitars, a shift cemented by the 2020 album “I Disagree” on Sumerian Records, where alternative metal, industrial passages, and melodic hooks intertwine. Occasional collaborations, notably with Grimes and Fever 333, reinforced her image as an artist straddling pop and alternative rock. She continued this hybrid approach with “Flux” in 2021, with a more organic sound, and “Zig” in 2023, while maintaining a strong connection to the visual and narrative aesthetics of her videos and stage performances, which extend her ongoing play with identity, pop persona, and the codes of digital culture.
