Lewis Capaldi
Born in 1996 in Whitburn, Scotland, Lewis Capaldi belongs to the tradition of singer-songwriters crafting melodic pop built around voice and piano. After early shows on the Scottish local scene and tracks shared online, he drew attention in 2017 with the single Bruises, followed by the EP Bloom that same year, which established him within the late-2010s British pop scene. Alternating piano-and-voice ballads with more expansive pop tracks, he shaped a style defined by a raspy voice, direct melodies, and introspective lyrics addressing heartbreak, grief, and emotional vulnerability. The EP Breach in 2018 paved the way for his debut album, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent (2019), which yielded Someone You Loved, a song that became a major hit in the UK and internationally. Capaldi then embarked on successive tours, moving from clubs to large venues and to European and North American festivals, with appearances at stages such as Glastonbury and TRNSMT, opening for established pop artists before headlining his own tours. In 2023, the album Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent continued this aesthetic of pop ballads and mid-tempo songs, while Capaldi adjusted his live schedule for health reasons, remaining associated with contemporary pop songwriting that is both melancholic and accessible.
