Sam Smith

Born in London and raised partly in Cambridgeshire, Sam Smith rose to prominence in the early 2010s at the crossroads of pop, soul, contemporary R&B and melodic dance music centered on the voice. The breakthrough came in 2012 with their contribution to Disclosure’s 'Latch', followed by 'La La La' with Naughty Boy in 2013, before their debut album, In the Lonely Hour (2014), established a songwriting focus on ballads, spare arrangements and gospel-inflected build-ups. Smith later developed a broader range, moving between heartbreak songs, orchestral pop and club-oriented tracks, while maintaining a supple and expressive delivery. The Thrill of It All (2017), Love Goes (2020) and Gloria (2023) mark this evolution, with collaborations spanning Disclosure to Calvin Harris, Normani, Demi Lovato, Kim Petras, and Jimmy Napes, a regular writing partner. Sam Smith also penned 'Writing’s on the Wall' for the Spectre film in 2015, then continued a trajectory that bridged major international pop stages, festivals and world tours. Their journey thus links the British vocal soul tradition to a contemporary pop that is open to radio-friendly formats as well as to more dance-oriented productions.
