Land Of Talk
Based in Montreal, Quebec, Land Of Talk is the project led by singer and guitarist Elizabeth Powell, formed in the mid‑2000s within the local indie rock scene. Land Of Talk’s music blends jagged indie‑rock guitars, dreamier passages bordering on shoegaze, and direct melodic writing, carried by a voice that is both fragile and razor‑edged. The band first released the EP Applause Cheer Boo Hiss (2006), followed by the debut album Some Are Lakes (2008)—made with contributions from Justin Vernon—and the EP Fun and Laughter (2009), before Cloak and Cipher (2010). This period coincided with tours across Canada, the United States, and Europe alongside other independent outfits. After a several‑year hiatus, Elizabeth Powell revived Land Of Talk with Life After Youth (2017), followed by Indistinct Conversations (2020), honing a more atmospheric aesthetic in which the arrangements remain restrained and centered on the guitar. Through various lineup changes, Land Of Talk has continued to revolve around Powell, who occasionally collaborates with the Broken Social Scene collective and keeps the project situated between indie rock, dream pop, and introspective songwriting.
