Jay Som

Jay Som’s music sits within indie rock tinged with bedroom pop. The project originated in the San Francisco Bay Area, shaped by Filipino heritage and Californian culture, before relocating to Los Angeles. Initially active on Bandcamp in the mid‑2010s, Jay Som drew attention with a series of home‑recorded demos that were collected on the 2016 album “Turn Into,” followed by “Everybody Works” (2017) and “Anak Ko” (2019), all released on the Polyvinyl label. Jay Som’s work is characterized by introspective songs carried by a soft voice, melodic guitars and arrangements with dream‑pop and shoegaze contours, while remaining rooted in clear pop songwriting. Multi‑instrumentalist Melina Duterte records and produces much of her material herself, extends that production work to other independent artists, and pursues collaborative projects such as a duo with Justus Proffit and the group Bachelor.
