Jessica Lea Mayfield
Born in Kent, Ohio, Jessica Lea Mayfield developed an early direct relationship with music by playing as a child in the family bluegrass group One Way Rider before turning to writing and guitar. Her career then moves through a register where indie rock, folk rock, and alternative country meet a darker sensibility inherited from American indie rock. Discovered in the mid-2000s by Dan Auerbach, she released her first album, With Blasphemy So Heartfelt, in 2008, followed by Tell Me in 2011, two records marked by stripped-down arrangements, a restrained vocal style, and songs that blend country melodies with electric tension. Mayfield then moved away from this initial formula with Make My Head Sing in 2014, where the sound became rougher, closer to an alternative rock with grunge-inflected accents. In parallel with her albums, she appeared on The Black Keys' Attack & Release in 2008 and on Dan Auerbach's Keep It Hid in 2009, before recording with Seth Avett the cover album Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott Smith in 2015. With Sorry Is Gone in 2017, Mayfield continued this evolution between abrasive guitars, pop structures, and introspective writing. Her trajectory places her at the crossroads of indie, Americana and alternative rock, in a format where the intimacy of songwriting remains central.
